Identity after a Late ADHD Diagnosis

Dear Reader!,

Just like that we are halfway through July. It's gone quickly for me - Rochester Pride events, people returning home, family crisis (we're all fine), the new dog....and suddenly I feel guilty that I've fallen behind in everything and wondering how many balls I may have dropped.

This is a great time to remind myself, and you, that "feelings aren't facts." I feel "behind in everything", but when I look at the full picture, am I really? And even if I have fallen behind somehow - should I feel guilty about that?

My reframe today is that I'm slightly behind where I want to be in one area. That's a fact. It's also a tiny part of the whole picture. And I don't need to feel guilty about that, especially given all the other things going on right now.

I hope that this reminder helps you out the next time you are letting your feelings imprint as facts in your brain. Be curious.

New Blog Post: Exploring Identity After A Late ADHD Diagnosis

So you finally got an ADHD diagnosis later in life. Suddenly many things make more sense.

Initially you may feel a deep sense of relief in the knowing. But you also may feel grief, anger, sorrow, or even disbelief.

Many humans think that getting the diagnosis will bring immediate clarity, and it does in some ways. But it also creates new questions.

After the initial feelings settle, you may be left with questions like:

  • Who am I when I’m not masking?
  • Who am I without all the guilt and shame?
  • What was ADHD and what wasn’t?
  • How much of my life has been spent hiding or adapting?

And suddenly you are exploring your identity in a new way.

Exploring identity isn’t about finding or creating a β€œnew you.” It’s often about reconnecting with parts of you that got buried under the masking and survival strategies.

Let’s chat about how we can explore in a healthy way.

Quick ADHD Tips: Micro-Regulation Strategies for Busy Days

  • Check in with yourself by asking, "What would make the next ten minutes easier?"
  • Take three slow breaths before switching from one task to the next.
  • Step outside or walk around the room for two minutes and let your senses catch up with you.
  • Take a sip of water and actually pay attention to drinking it.
  • Stretch for thirty seconds before diving into the next thing.
  • Put a hand on your chest and remind yourself that you're safe right now.
  • Look away from screens for a minute and focus on something farther away.
  • Use a favorite scent, texture, or comfort item to help ground yourself.
  • Shake out tension instead of carrying it all day.

Gentle Reflection Question

What is something you've been blaming yourself for that might actually deserve more curiosity than criticism?
